Learn more about HAP

Michigan’s Hunting Access Program (HAP) was created in 1977 to increase public hunting opportunities in southern Michigan where 97 percent of the land base is privately owned. This program is now one of the oldest dedicated private lands public access programs in the nation.

The HAP is a great way to support Michigan’s hunting heritage, natural resource conservation and our local economy.  It is also a great way to have your property work for you, earning money that many HAP landowners use to help pay property taxes.  Property owners are encouraged to arrange leases that fit their own interests and use of the land.

The ICD has been awarded a HAP grant for the upcoming year and can provide information and assistance to anyone interested in learning more about and/or enrolling in this program.  Contact our office if you would like to learn more about options that may be available to you.

Looking for a free place to hunt this year?  There are several Hunting Access Program properties less than an hour away that allow public hunting.  We especially encourage you to visit the new HAP Property in NE Ingham County!  Use the Mi-Hunt app to access a map of properties near you.

Deer hunters, please be aware that Chronic Wasting Disease has been detected in Ingham County.  Be aware of rules and opportunities that affect our county and others in the CWD Management Zone.  Visit the State of Michigan website for up to date information and a list of FAQs about CWD.
